Disasters in Action

Emergency planning specialists from across Warwickshire attended the second annual Disasters in Action seminar in Leamington Spa on Friday 27 April.

The event was organised by Warwickshire County Council’s Emergency Planning Unit and featured an impressive line up of speakers.  These included Richard Barnes who chaired the 7 July Review Committee following the London bombings, Dr. Lindsey Davies who is the national lead on pandemic flu preparedness and Assistant Chief Constable Simon Parr who led the response for Hertfordshire Police following the Buncefield oil depot explosion.

Jeremy Lee, Manager of the Emergency Planning Unit said:
“The aim of the event is to bring together a range of speakers who have either been directly involved in responding to major emergencies or who are experts in their professions.  By sharing their experiences and learning the lessons from previous major emergencies and national exercises we can help our partner agencies in Warwickshire to be better prepared.”

The event was attended by 81 delegates representing 24 different agencies and also included speakers on climate change and the London tornado.

Councillor Richard Hobbs, Portfolio Holder for Community Safety with Warwickshire County Council said:

”The Emergency services, local authorities and many other agencies work closely together in Warwickshire to ensure an efficient and coordinated response to any emergency.  While we all hope that Warwickshire will not experience an event on the scale of some of the seminar’s examples we are committed to continuing to ensure that we are as best prepared as possible and events such this seminar can help greatly towards achieving that aim”
