Competition winners enjoy a day to spark their imaginations!
Winners of a Kitchen Fire Safety competition, Joanne Godfrey and Emma Robertson got a real treat this weekend when they visited Leamington Fire Station.
Both girls spent the day looking at the role of a firefighter and talking to a crew about what happens when they are called to emergencies. One of the winners, Emma was so excited by what she saw, that she now wants to be a firefighter when she grows up.
As well as talking to firefighters, using the hoses and looking around the fire engine, the girls also received a goody bag, which was kindly donated by Argos, Guy St, Leamington Spa.
The Kitchen Fire Safety competition was run in March, by Warwickshire County Council’s Fire and Rescue Service in partnership with MFI as part of a drive to reduce the amount of kitchen fires in Leamington, Warwick and Kenilworth.
Crew Manager, Jerry Horne said:
“The main aim of the whole competition was to spark the imagination of young people and get them to look at fire safety in an imaginative way. The girls had a great time on Saturday and we were really pleased to be able to make their day. Emma’s parents have already told us that along with a number of other career aspirations, firefighting has now been added to her list!
In Warwickshire last year there were 138 kitchen fires, 43 of these were in the central area. A number of these incidents included grills and cookers being left unattended.
