A-peeling to compost

A third of all household rubbish could go straight back into nourishing the garden rather than adding to growing landfill mountains according to a Warwickshire expert.

This weekend National Compost Awareness Week gets underway on Sunday, May 6, and Warwickshire County Council’s Sustainability Group Manager Glenn Fleet is calling on people to give composting a go.

Warwickshire County Council in partnership with WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme) offers compost bins for the subsidised rate of £10 for the 330 litre bin and £8 for the 220 litre bin.

These can be obtained by calling 0845 073 2001 and they can be delivered free to your door. Each householder can order up to three bins for delivery to their home address.

About 30 per cent of the average bin could be composted, removing the smelliest element of household rubbish, creating a great soil conditioner for the garden and improving the environment. Waste that can be composted includes fruit and vegetable peelings, coffee grounds and tea bags, egg shells, grass clippings and leaves.

Glenn Fleet said: “Composting has traditionally been seen as something that only keen gardeners can do. But now people know we need to recycle more and reduce waste sent to landfill sites, composting is being seen as a practical solution for disposing of our green waste. And our gardens benefit too.”

If you don’t wish to compost at home, you can take your green waste, not including your kitchen waste to the you nearest recycling centre. Visit http://www.warwickshire.gov.uk/waste to find your nearest site or to see if your area has a green bin collection.
