Advice for deaf awareness week
During Deaf Awareness Week (7 – 13 May), Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service are reminding people who are deaf or hard of hearing about the importance of having a working smoke alarm in their home.
County Fire Officer, William Brown said: "I would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone of the importance of having a working smoke alarm in their home and more specifically, for people who are deaf or hard of hearing to have the most suitable alarm for their particular circumstances. This applies especially to those people living in rented accommodation as although there may already be smoke alarms installed, they might not be suitable for your individual needs.”
Smoke Alarms work by emitting a loud noise when smoke is detected. People who are deaf of hard of hearing may need different ways of making them aware the alarm has been activated. Alarms can be fitted with vibrating pads and/or flashing strobe light.
William Brown continued: "The pad should be placed under your mattress or pillow to wake you up at night if there is a fire. When smoke is detected, the alarm will sound and set off the light and pad. This will wake you up instantly.
"We all have a part to play in creating safer communities, Deaf Awareness Week is an ideal opportunity for those who have anyone who is deaf or hard of hearing in their homes to make sure they have the most suitable alarm for their needs.”
