Don’t miss this year’s Warwickshire Walking Festival

An array of walks of all kinds are on offer this year as part of Warwickshire’s Walking Festival hot on the heels of the success of last year’s event.

The festival, organised by Warwickshire County Council’s Countryside Recreation Team, gets underway on the Whitsun Bank Holiday weekend on Saturday, May 26, and continues through until Sunday, June 3.

During this period there will be a festival of 70 guided walks across Warwickshire taking in familiar spots and hidden gems in the county.

There will be walks in Warwickshire’s historic towns and villages, stately homes, a civil war battlefield, an ancient stone circle, and an organic farm.

Walkers will also have the chance to join a themed walk about trees, wildlife or geology, or famous figures such as George Eliot or Shakespeare. Local myths and ghost tales will also be recounted on some of the walks.

Or simply enjoy Warwickshire’s beautiful countryside, from the rolling hills of the Cotswold fringe to the canals and Country Parks of North Warwickshire, or maybe discover a fantastic country pub.

There are walks suitable for all abilities, including health walks and a Wheelchair Walk, and everything from a 1 mile stroll around town to 15 mile ramble through stunning countryside.

Anyone attending our walks can enter a prize draw, with a chance to win prizes from local outdoor shops Go Outdoors and Jacksons of Arley. Or walkers can enter our photo competition for a chance to see your pictures of the Festival in print in the Autumn edition of Viewpoint magazine.

You can also show your support for Macmillan Cancer Support by making a donation on any of the walks, or by visiting Elmhurst Organic Farm for the Walk Wonders for Macmillan event on 26th and 27th May 2007.

Cllr Martin Heatley, Warwickshire County Council’s Cabinet member for Environmental Services, said: “There are some fantastic walks here for all ages and abilities. By checking through the detailed guide people can choose whether they go for a walk near to home, or travel to discover another part of the county.

“We are grateful to Macmillan and BBC Coventry & Warwickshire for their support, and to ARUP, Consulting Engineers, for sponsoring the Warwickshire Walking Festival.”
