Put them away until collection day!
Warwickshire County Council’s Fire & Rescue Service and Warwickshire Police are urging residents to keep their bins secure until collection day, after an increase in bin fires is beginning to cause concern.
Over the few past months there has been a marked increase in wheelie bin fires. These are due to people leaving their wheelie bin in the street, even after the rubbish had been collected. By working with the police, we are hoping to stop this problem from escalating, before someone is either killed or seriously injured in Warwickshire.
Arson Reduction Manager Ian Tonner said:
”There has been a significant increase in wheelie bin fires over the last couple of months, a rise which is causing us some concern. We believe that the bins are being targeted by arsonists due to them being left in the street or in front gardens, for long periods of time before and after they have been emptied.
“Fire and rescue Service from across the country have been experiencing some horrific statistics, the latest was the death in Northamptonshire of a three year old boy who died following the ignition of his family wheelie bin outside their property. The fire spread quickly due to its location against the property, adjacent to a window. Also four other fatal fires can be attributed to wheelie bins, two in Merseyside and another two in Sheffield. All these fires were started in the wheelie bin and due to the location spread quickly to the building. These statistics have heightened the need to be extra vigilant.
“Wheelie bin fires can be stopped, but not without the assistance of local residents. It is important that local residents follow the advice set out below and that they store their wheelie bin in a safe and secure place away from doors and windows. This will not only reduce the potential abuse of bins but will also ensure that if a fire were to start people are still able to exit their properties in safety. ”
Only put bins out when due for collection (morning of collection not night before)
Put bins back and ensure they are secure when empty
Don’t overfill or leave loose rubbish around the bin
Never store bins close to doors, windows or service intakes - any fire in the bin could easily spread to your property
If possible, wheelie bins should be stored securely behind locked gates
If a secure location is not available the wheelie bin should be closed and secured away from buildings at least 2m if possible.
Bins should be placed on the highway on collection day and returned to your property as soon as possible after emptying
Sergent Rymell from Warwickshire Police says, “ We have experienced some wheelie bins being stolen from properties and then found burnt out in the local vicinity. I would urge all residents with wheelie bins to secure them away from their properties. Apart from the danger caused by setting them alight they can also be used when placed against buildings to gain entry for burglars and have even been used aid the removal of stolen property.-Ends-
