Mediation service and Folk Festival to benefit from funding

Two projects in Warwick district are set to benefit from a total of more than £12,000 of funding from Warwickshire County Council’s Well Being Fund.

It follows approval by councillors at the latest Warwick Area Committee meeting.

One of the projects to receive funding is the Mediation and Community Support Service, which has been in operation in Warwick district since 2000.

The project offers a mediation service for people in the Leamington Spa area who find themselves involved in neighbourhood disputes or conflicts.

Unusually, the service trains community volunteers to carry out mediation work rather than employing just professional staff.

The service has plans to extend its services into schools, workplaces and into parent and child mediation.

However, the project’s existing National Lottery funding is now coming to an end and various follow-up funding bids are currently in the pipeline.

Warwick Area Committee has approved a grant of £10,290 to help the project towards securing a sustainable long term future.

Councillor Sarah Boad, Chair of Warwick Area Committee, said: “The Mediation and Community Support Service has proved immensely successful in its years of operation and is poised to develop further.

"We hope the award of this grant will give the project the time it needs to secure long term sustainable funding.”

The second project to receive funding is Warwick Folk Festival, now a well-established and successful annual event, which this year takes place from 27 to 29 July.

In recent years, Warwick Area Committee has supported the festival and encouraged any activities that enable local people to participate in the event.

This year, the county council is contributing £2,500 worth of funding to a street festival, which will be held in Warwick town centre during the Folk Festival weekend, and a Singing Safari educational project, which will enable local people with an interest in singing to get involved in the festival.

Councillor Sarah Boad said: “Warwick Folk Festival is a significant cultural event locally and these elements of the project are aimed at making the festival accessible to the local community, so we are delighted to be able to contribute towards them.”

Warwick Area Committee covers the towns of Warwick, Royal Leamington Spa, Kenilworth and Whitnash, together with adjoining rural areas.

As well as taking decisions on grants to local organisations, it has responsibility for making some decisions and recommendations about county council services in the area and provides a local view on the big issues affecting the county.
