Poster campaign targets motorcycle casualties

A summer long campaign has been launched by Warwickshire County Council’s Road Safety Unit to try and reduce the number of motorcycle casualties.

Eye-catching posters are being displayed along rural roads that have experienced high levels of collisions involving motorcyclists.

The posters address the common causes of motorcycle casualties; rider error and driver inattention. The first poster encourages motorcyclists to ride cautiously by stating ‘To Die For…? Ride Safely’. The second poster reminds other road user to be vigilant for motorcycles by stating ‘Think Bike’.

Warwickshire’s rural roads are popular with motorcyclists who enjoy the mix of stunning scenery, challenging routes and well-maintained surfaces. Every year however many motorcyclists are killed or injured on the counties roads. Last year 76 riders were killed or seriously injured and a further 142 suffered lesser injuries.

Motorcyclists are also over represented in casualty figures. Riders typically make up one per cent of traffic, but last year accounted for 19 per cent of road users killed or seriously injured in Warwickshire.

Cllr Martin Heatley, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: “More and more people are taking to the road on motorcycles and I fully understand why. They are a great way to get around, offering flexibility, freedom and fun, but they also bring risk. These posters appeal to both riders and drivers to play their part in reducing the number of motorcycle casualties on our roads.”
