Coffee morning for carers kickstarts special week

As a prelude to National Carers’ Week (11-17 June), Kenilworth Library is to hold a coffee morning on Thursday 7 June, geared towards helping and supporting carers in the area.

The library will be visited by the South Warwickshire Carers Support Service who will be talking about their work and how they can help people who care for relatives, friends or neighbours.

South Warwickshire Carers Service is funded by Warwickshire County Council, the Primary Care Trust and the Community Fund.

It runs drop-ins, a helpline that runs throughout the week, can advise on a number of issues ranging from benefits, equipment and home adaptations, help at home and breaks for carers.

The service can also advise carers of all ages and backgrounds on groups which help them to enjoy social activities and learn skills such as IT and crafts.

As part of Carers’ Week’s activities, Dr Graeme Betts, Warwickshire County Council’s Strategic Director of Adult Services, will be travelling to London to join Ivan Lewis MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Care Services, to talk about supporting carers.

Whilst appreciating that carers need to be kept at the forefront of the national agenda, Dr Betts spoke of the value to local people of events such as the coffee morning.  He said:

“We are working with partners nationally to promote the needs of Warwickshire’s many carers.  We recognise the value of what carers do in keeping older people, people with disabilities or illnesses in their homes.

“However, we also want to give our full support to local initiatives which do so much to support carers.

"The South warwickshire Carers Support Service do an untold amount of work helping people in the community and I hope that people who are caring for someone will find the time to come to the library and see what help and suppport is out there for them.”

The coffee morning starts at 10.30 at Kenilworth Library on Thursday 7 June.  Log on to http://www.swcss.org.uk for further details of the South Warwickshire Carers Support Service.
