Firefighters aim to help carers in Warwickshire

Firefighters are urging carers to take some time out to think about fire safety - during National Carers Week (11 – 17 June).

Carers are at the sharp end of looking after some of the most vulnerable in society, older people and people with disabilities.  Carers are busy people and are often focussing heavily on the work that they do, but as well as caring for people, they are also the eyes and ears that are able to see if a risk is present and prevent it happening.

Area Risk Manager, Simon Ellershaw said:
“Older people and people with disabilities are most vulnerable from fire, which is why Warwickshire County Council’s Fire and Rescue Service is supporting National Carers Week by highlighting the services we provide.

“In the central area, we have seen an increase in the number of kitchen fires we have and a number of these are due to people, like carers being distracted whilst cooking.  During the week we are asking carers to think about the people they are caring for and to find out whether they would be eligible for a Free, home fire safety check.”

We all have a part to play in creating safer communities. National Carers Week is an ideal opportunity for all of us to support those who care and also extend our hand to those who may be vulnerable.
