County Council staff - get ready for World Scout Jamboree!
Five staff from Warwickshire County Council are counting down the days until they have to dust off their tents and grab their backpacks, as they head off to the world scout jamboree.
As well as working for the County Council, Di Gough, Dawn Clutton, Nicola Lomas, Joseph Lingard and Paul Ovard are also Scout, Brownie, Guides and Ranger Leaders in Leamington. All of the leaders will be going to this year’s world scout jamboree representing their district.
Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Services Youth Development Administrator, Di Gough said:
“This is a really exciting event and we are all looking forward to meeting other leaders from across the globe to talk about the work that they do with their scouts and guides. Working in the youth development department a lot of my work is focussed on helping young people to succeed, working with the guides, I guess is just an extension of that.”
Like any Scout event, the World Scout Jamboree offers Participants a programme that enables them to develop all facets of their character. The Jamboree takes place every four years in a different country. This year’s event is taking place at Hylands Park near Chelmsford, Essex. The programme proposes a wide variety of activities and also places great importance on the way the young people take part, by offering them interaction and real participation in everyday life on their campsite.
Finance Assistant, Paul Ovard said:
“My role at the jamboree will be to work as part of the entertainment team. We have a mammoth task of entertaining young people from all over the world, which obviously takes some organising. I think that the whole team are really looking forward to taking part in the event and it will be a really big change from the work that I do on a day-to-day basis.”
The first World Scout Jamboree took place in England in 1920 and since then 20 such events have been held. The United Kingdom is hosting the 21st World Scout Jamboree in 2007, under the theme “One World One Promise”.
Although it is called the world scout jamboree, guides are also able to attend. In total it is expected that over 40,000 participants from 240 different countries will be at the event, most of which will be aged between 14 – 17.
