Workers get back in the saddle for Bike Week
More than 40 Warwickshire County Council workers based in Warwick took advantage of a free breakfast and hot drink to commute in by bicycle yesterday morning.
Yesterday was Bike2Work day as part of activities during National Bike Week, and the county council organised a special treat for any workers who headed in by bicycle.
And as well as those in Warwick cycling, approaching 100 local authority workers travelled in by bicycle yesterday.
Warwickshire County Council’s sustainable travel team have based themselves in Warwick town centre all day offering people the chance to have their bike checked out by ‘Dr Bike’ courtesy of John Atkins cycles in Leamington, or pick up leaflets and advice on the many cycle routes around the county.
Cycling 30 minutes to work will be about 200 calories, which is the equivalent of burning 11kg (almost two stone) in weight a year.
Staff unable to cycle on the day are being asked to make a donation to Leukaemia Research.
Cllr Martin Heatley, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: “Bike Week is a great excuse for all ages to get on their bikes and get fit at the same time, while helping to cut pollution.”
