“Greenaway “ Shadowing Gets Going in Warwickshire!
Fifteen Warwickshire primary and secondary schools have been “shadowing” the Kate Greenaway Book Award during the summer term.
The award is presented for the most outstanding illustrated book for children published in the previous year. Past winners of the prestigious award include Quentin Blake, Helen Oxenbury, Shirley Hughes and P.J Lynch.
The project organised by Warwickshire Schools Library Service mirrors the national award with the process of judging a shortlist of six books. The shortlist this year included:
“The Emperior of Absurdia” by Chris Riddell
“The Elephantom” by Ross Collins
“Augustus and his Smile” by Catherine Rayner
“Scoop” by John Kelly and Cathy Tincknell
“The Adventures of the Dish and the Spoon” by Mini Grey
“Orange Pear Apple Bear” by Emily Gravett
Pupils involved met at a celebratory event on 20 June to hear the announcement of their votes. Special guest illustrator was the highly successful and accomplished illustrator Jane Ray. Jane was shortlisted for the award in 2006 for her beautiful illustrations in the book “Jinnie Ghost”.
Celia Merriman, joint manager of the Schools Library Service said: “The great thing about shadowing is that it brings children and books together. It provides real value added enjoyment and fun. Pictures certainly do paint 1000 words and children have been enjoying and critically examining the wonderful variety of illustrations the award showcases”
Warwickshire Schools Library Service offers advice, training and resources to schools. In addition, the service works to promote literacy and the joy of reading through events like their Warwickshire Secondary School Book Award and national book shadowing projects.
