Coleshill Parkway on track for late summer opening

The first test train has been run to the new multi-million pound Coleshill Parkway station, and work is on track for an official opening in late August.

The test train was run at the request of Her Majesty’s Railway Inspectorate to check stepping distances from the platforms to and from the train along with other operational matters.

Early indications are that all the tests were successfully carried out, and Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for the Environment, Cllr Martin Heatley, said: “Engineers from the county council’s joint developer John Laing and Central Trains are pleased with the results, marking a further important step on the way to opening the station in late August.”

The train, operated by Central Trains, left Birmingham New Street at 11.59 to Coleshill and after the tests were carried out departed at 12.27 to Nuneaton.

The finishing touches are now being made to the ambitious multi-million pound transport scheme for Coleshill offering a new railway station and transport interchange to serve the town.

The railway station offers a new two-platform stop for trains on the Birmingham to Nuneaton railway line.  Associated facilities include a car park with priority disabled parking, cycle facilities, ticket office and a pedestrian footbridge.

The scheme is co-funded by the Department for Transport, Warwickshire County Council, John Laing, and developer contributions secured by North Warwickshire Borough Council. Carillion Rail is carrying out the construction.

Andy Pearson, Director of Rail Projects at John Laing, added: “Coleshill Parkway will provide commuters, residents, employees of Hams Hall and users of Birmingham International Airport with a convenient alternative access to rail travel.”
