Bike Week success

Bike Week (16-24 June) has been hailed a huge success by Warwickshire County Council with more local authority employees than ever choosing to cycle to and from work.

On Bike to Work Day (Tuesday 19th) cycling staff’s efforts were rewarded with breakfast treats and free goodie bags – in total more than 80 bags were handed out to cycling staff members.

Cllr Martin Heatley, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio for the Environment, said: “It was great to see so many staff members heading into work by bike and reducing the number of cars on the road.

“Cycling just half an hour each way on a commute each day would burn more than two stone in weight over a year. There are also the huge environmental benefits of cycling, plus you don’t have to pay for parking.

“I’d also like to say a thank you to Fairtrade companies Traidcraft and Tropical Wholefoods who kindly donated the tasty energy bars given out on the day, and to John Atkins Cycles of Leamington for providing a free Dr Bike in Market Square, Warwick, for any bikes needing some TLC.”

Collection tins are also being sent off this week to Leukaemia Research following donations from staff travelling to work by car. The money will be used to fund a wide range of projects to help fight Leukaemia and related blood disorders in both children and adults.

Another successful event in Bike Week was the Leamington Peace Festival where the county council’s Sustainable Travel Team had a stand with Cycleways and John Atkins Cycles offering advice and information on local cycle routes and other forms of sustainable travel. Despite the rain on Saturday, the stand proved very popular.
