Brownies crow over scary creation

A group of brownies took extra care not to scare Brown Owl when they recently made a ‘green’ scarecrow out of recycled materials.

Leamington Brownies created Scary Scarlet the scarecrow with a little help from Warwick’s enviro-arts group CREATES.

Their scarecrow is being entered into a scarecrow competition for Britain in Bloom and they hope to see Scary Scarlet take pride of place at Jephson Gardens.

Twelve brownies from the 4th Leamington Brownies went to the ‘warehouse of wonders’ at CREATES in Warwick to use recycled materials to construct their scarecrow.

The girls said: “We’ve had so much fun and would love to come again”.

The reclaimed materials were supplied by Warwick-based CREATES (Creative Recycling Enviro-Arts Training and Education Service) which is run by recycling company Trees are Green and Warwickshire County Council’s Artists in Warwickshire Education team.

Professional artist, Emily Warner, from CREATES was also on hand to help the brownies use a variety of crafty techniques with old CDs, foam offcuts, clothes hangers and reels while helping the environment at the same time.

Trees are Green deliver solutions to companies on waste reduction, recycling and disposal operations and has organised for companies to supply waste materials for use in the CREATES arts workshops and projects.
Trees are Green are always looking for more companies to support their work. If your company would like to get involved in the CREATES scheme please contact them on 01926 498855.
