Museum goes Potter potty

Warwickshire Museum is inviting children to attend an event full of wizardry on Friday 20 July between 6 – 8pm.

As it marks the publication of the latest Harry Potter book ‘Deathly Hallows’, young writers are being invited to submit a story, written by themselves, the winning entry to be read out during the event.

Also present will be two Barn Owls for young people to handle; these have been supplied by John Bird of Nuneaton.  Other treats will include quizzes, a fancy dress competition with a wizard theme and a “time turner trail” where they can explore the galleries whilst being transported through the ages. Everyone will also receive instructions on how to make their own Marauder’s Map on departure!

Michelle Phillips, Visitor Services Manager, said:  “We are looking to increase the opportunities for all the family to use the museum and this is a great way to bring in the younger audience.  We hope that young people will have a great time and realise how much there is for them to enjoy at the museum.”

The cost of the event is £1.50 per child.  (Under 8s should be accompanied by an adult.) It is advisable to pre-book although you are welcome to just join in with us on the night!

Young writers are being invited to submit short stories with a ‘Defence against the Dark Arts’ theme.  These should be based on the museum’s “magic inscription ring” or “miniature shield” which can currently be found on display in the archaeology gallery.

Entries should be sent to Warwickshire Museum, Market Place, Warwick CV34 4SA or emailed to michellephillipsetc by 19 July.

Later that evening, Warwick Books in the Market Place will be holding a street party with a quiz, fancy dress and a magician building up towards the countdown at midnight when the book goes on sale.
