New voice for North Warwickshire’s young people

Three young people from North Warwickshire have been voted in as new members of the County Youth Panel (CYP).

The new CYPs are Debbie Horton, Lee Simister and Matt Woolard. Cllr Ray Sweet who acted as the returning officer announced the results of the elections at the Ratcliffe Youth Centre.

From 25-28 June young people headed for the polling booths in youth centres and schools across North Warwickshire to vote for their new members of the County Youth Panel.

The three successful candidates who won the North Warwickshire seats were 16 year-old Matt Woolard, a student at Polesworth International Language College, 13 year-old Debbie Horton and 16 year-old Lee Simister who are both pupils at Queen Elizabeth School.

The County Youth Panel gives young people aged from 11-19 the opportunity to voice their views on a number of issues that affect them by meeting councillors and other decision makers. The current members of the County Youth Panel (CYPs) have produced a promotional DVD of their work. They are working with school governors on Relationship and Sex Education and have also put together a survey to help tackle the problem of bullying in schools.
Cllr Ray Sweet said:  “I am always impressed by the commitment of our CYPs who make a valuable contribution to the political process.”

Shinderpaul Bhangal of Warwickshire County Council’s Youth and Community Service said: “The Youth Panel plays an important role in giving young people from across Warwickshire a voice, and works closely with a number of departments within the County Council as well as other organisations.”

Cllr Izzi Seccombe, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, said: “I would like to congratulate our new members of the County Youth Panel. We work very closely together with the CYPs and we are keen to hear about the issues that face them.”
The elections are organised by Warwickshire County Council’s Services to Young People.
