‘Scenes of Clerical Life’ is Book of the Day
To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the publication of George Eliot’s ‘Scenes of Clerical Life’, Warwickshire Libraries are featuring it as the book of the day a week on Friday (13 July).
Across the county, library staff will be focussing on the book with customers visiting the library. A review of the book will also feature on the library website homepage for virtual customers
To commemorate the anniversary, a partnership between Warwickshire Libraries and the George Eliot Fellowship has been distributing free copies of ‘Scenes of Clerical Life’ to reading groups across the county. Libraries have been distributing the books whilst the fellowship has had over 50 other groups, not set up as reading groups, request copies.
Alison McKellar of Warwickshire Libraries said: “We are delighted that the book, which is a great read and as relevant to us in the 21st century as it was when George Eliot wrote it 150 years ago, has proven so popular with contemporary audiences and that its anniversary has generated such interest in Eliot across the county.”
‘Scenes of Clerical Life’ is, in fact, three short novels, set in Milby (in reality, Nuneaton) featuring the trials of the local curate, the story of a young Italian woman living at Cheverel Manor (Arbury Hall) and the tale of an abused wife who is battling alcoholism and finds solace in the form of a non-conformist preacher.
Further information about George Eliot can be found on the county council website at http://www.warwickshire.gov.uk/libraries . Groups who would like copies of the book should contact John Burton on 024 7661 9126.
