Firefighters praised for their work during the Sheffield floods!

Rugby Firefighters were called upon to help during the floods in Sheffield as residents were stranded in their homes by the rising floodwater.

Ten firefighters from (Rugby) Warwickshire County Council’s Fire and Rescue Service took a Land Rover vehicle with supporting fire appliance, rescue boats and inflatable walkways on the evening of Monday 25 June.  The high volume pump was also deployed from Stratford Fire Station, supporting crews from Coleshill were deployed to assist in pumping out water from the streets as part of the clear up operation. In total Warwickshire Firefighters rescued over 40 residents, some of who were in there 80’s.

County Fire Officer, William Brown said:
“The crews did a tremendous job in assisting South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.  I would like to thank all of those involved in both the rescues and clean up operation. Being able to provide this level of support to other fire and rescue services in times of a crises shows how effective the services emergency plans are.”

Area Risk officer, Mick Leach said:
“Crews worked extremely well in hazardous and arduous conditions.  As well as being on standby in case the Ulley reservoir dam burst, they were also involved in a number of rescues of people who were trapped by the rising floodwater.”
