Council volunteers ‘box clever’ at the Walled Garden
A team of volunteers from Warwickshire County Council spent the day making some very special boxes at Allesley Park Walled Garden last week (Wednesday 4th July).
The volunteers from the County Council’s Improvement and Support Service, who chose the Walled Garden project for their ‘team-building’ day, worked with volunteers from Allesley Park Walled Garden Group.
The group is working to restore the 18th century walled garden to how it might have looked when first built in 1790.
The local authority volunteers’ first task was to make some large wooden compost bins to turn weeds, leaves and hedge trimmings into fertile compost to feed the heritage vegetables and fruit grown by the group and sold at their Garden Markets.
The rest of the day the council volunteers spent weeding, trimming the box hedges and making bark paths between the vegetables.
Project Officer for the County Council’s group, Harkii Heran, said:
“Our team were very excited to have the opportunity to contribute back to our local community. It was also a good chance to get out into the great outdoors.
“Creating a sustainable environment and working in partnership with the community are both big issues for the council, so we hope we contributed to these in some small way on our team-building day.”
Allesley Park Walled Garden Group’s secretary, Maureen Harris added:
"We are delighted that so many groups from all over Coventry and beyond are getting to know about this important project to restore the walled garden.
