Puffin proposal to keep pupils safe

Residents and parents are being asked to give their views on whether a new crossing should be installed on a busy Atherstone road.

Concern has been expressed about the speed of traffic on Witherley Road near Queen Elizabeth School and the problems for pupils crossing the road.

Discussions have taken place between Warwickshire County Council officers, the local county councillor Cllr Richard Grant, Warwickshire Police and representatives of the school, including the School Council.

The County Council is currently undertaking a review of speed limits on A and B roads in the county and Witherley Road will be included in this review.

In the meantime, it is proposed to construct a puffin crossing near the entrance to the school. The scheme will be funded by Warwickshire County Council as part of its “Safer Routes to Schools” initiative to encourage pupils to walk or cycle to school rather than travel by car.

Cllr Grant said: “I have been contacted on many occasions about this stretch of road and I believe that as well as improving safety for pupils, the crossing will act as a calming feature and contribute to a reduction in traffic speeds.”

Consultation on this proposal is currently underway, with views welcomed until Friday, July 20.
