Ambitious plans for Nuneaton town centre

The co-location of two colleges into the heart of Nuneaton is to be considered next week as part of proposals to transform an area of the town centre.

Warwickshire County Council’s Nuneaton and Bedworth Area Committee will meet on Tuesday, July 10, to consider an alternative proposal to one of the sites identified in the 2004 Nuneaton and Bedworth Masterplan.

The report will focus on the site opposite the Criminal Justice Centre, known as the Vicarage Street site, where the town’s police station and Magistrates Court used to be based and where the current library is sited.

The alternative proposal is for a new block of buildings to house North Warwickshire and Hinckley College and King Edward VI College who wish to co-locate onto a single site in the town centre.

As part of this redevelopment, and because of the impact the scheme will have on the existing library, councillors will also be asked to consider plans to relocate the library to facilitate the development of the Vicarage Street site.

Cllr Chris Saint, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for Economic Development, said: “The college’s proposals potentially offer a unique opportunity, but need to be thoroughly debated. Members will have their first opportunity to consider the detail and the impact at the Area Committee meeting on 10th July. I look forward to local members views on how we should shape Nuneaton town centre.”

The recommendations from the Area Committee will be taken to the County Council’s Cabinet for a final decision. Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council will also need to consider the proposals. If the go ahead is ultimately given, work could start on site in October of next year, with completion expected in 2011.
