Rugby pupils tune up for wider opportunities

Children in Rugby have been trying different instruments as part of a scheme aimed at giving them the chance to take part in music making.

Six concerts have been held across the borough as part of Warwickshire County Council’s County Music Service summer festival.

The children were able to look at and try different instruments and singing, and performed their efforts in a concert.

Children from Long Lawford Primary School and Binley Woods Primary School were among those taking part in a concert at St Marie’s Junior School yesterday. They were joined by the St Marie’s school choir and the county Junior Wind Band.

Helen Harrison, teacher at Binley Woods, said: “It’s been fantastic and the children have got so much out of it.”

Jeremy Dibb of County Music Service said: “The Wider Opportunities scheme has proved very popular. We have had lots of children having a taster of all sorts of different music.

"They have been able to perform in a concert alongside more established groups, giving them an opportunity to see what they might be able to achieve if they take up music more regularly.”
