Children learnt some ‘Crucial’ lessons

Children from five special schools across Warwickshire have been learning some life saving lessons at this year’s Crucial Crew.

The schools taking part included Brooke School Rugby, Exhall Grange School Ash Green, Oakwood Primary School in Nuneaton, Ridgeway School Warwick and Round Oak School Leamington.

The event, which was run by Warwickshire County Council’s Fire and Rescue Service, Road Safety Team and Trading Standards, ran from Monday 9 July to Friday 13 July. Partner agencies included Warwickshire Police, National Grid, TNT, Royal Life Saving Society, West Midlands Ambulance Service, St John’s Ambulance and EON.

The young people who attend were aged between 9 and 10 and learnt about a wide range of issues including how to make 999 calls and escape from a smoke filled room, road safety – looking at drivers blind spots, internet safety, the danger of playing near power lines with kites and footballs, what to do in the event of a gas leak and how to stay safe when playing near safety.

Gary Smith, Community Fire Safety Officer, said: “This event went really well and we were really pleased with the enthusiasm that all of the children showed. For some of the children attending on Friday the tasks were quite challenging, but all of the children put a 100% effort into all of the activities and we hope that they have learnt some really valuable messages.”
