Herbert Fowler set for makeover
An Arley primary school is set for a summer transformation with a hugely successful community project making a return.
Last year hundreds of volunteers descended on Ash Green School to completely re-decorate the buildings within a week.
And next month Herbert Fowler Junior School in Ansley Lane, Arley is set for the same treatment.
Volunteers are being recruited for the project, which has already attracted offers of materials and support from local businesses.
Congregations from the Kings Church in Bedworth and other local churches have pledged their support, and governors, teachers and parents at the school have also signed up.
But more volunteers are being sought for the highly-organised operation, with up to 600 people needed to get the work done in time.
The walls are being cleared of posters and artwork this week as the school closes for the summer break, and the decorating is to be carried out in the week beginning 20 August.
Headteacher Linda Weyman said: “This is the icing on the cake for us as we come to the end of the year. We were put into the category of special measures by Ofsted earlier in the year but the latest review from the inspectors was very positive. We have had some improvements such as new doors made to the school this year and this will really transform the school environment. Everyone is very excited about it and a lot of people are getting involved.“
One of the organisers, Jeff Robinson, said: “When we did Ash Green last year it took a while for people to understand what we were doing but enthusiasm grew for the project. Everyone got such a buzz out of it that this time we’ve had a rush of people and companies wanting to be involved and contribute. Although we had a lot of pupils from Ash Green give up their holiday to come along, we will not be able to involve the children from Herbert Fowler during the actual makeover as they are younger. However the pupils have been playing a vital role this week in helping the teachers choose the colour scheme for their classrooms. We’ve had a magnificent response in the first week, but we still need many more volunteers to take part.”
