Major works on A444/M6 junction – 4 weekends in August
Essential carriageway and bridge repairs at the A444 / M6 Junction 3, north of Coventry, will be carried out as part of a coordinated scheme by the Highways Agency and Warwickshire County Council.
The A444 northbound approach to the M6 Junction 3 will be closed during four weekends in August starting on Friday 3 August.
To keep traffic delays to a minimum, work will be carried out overnight from 8.00pm to 6.00am on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday nights only. Work will not be carried out over the August Bank Holiday weekend.
Tony Iwanikiw, Warwickshire County Council’s Project Manager said: “The works at this very busy location have been jointly and carefully planned over several months and are a good example of the Highways Agency and Warwickshire County Council working together to minimise the work’s impact on the local community and travelling public.
“Warwickshire County Council will carry out localised repairs and resurfacing of sections of the A444 roundabout together with modification to lane makings and directional signage over a series of four weekends in August. The work will improve safety and help reduce congestion on the roundabout and its approaches.”
Paul Davies, Highways Agency Project Sponsor said: “Repairs to the M6 bridge are needed following vehicle impacts. We have planned our work in conjunction with Warwickshire County Council to minimise the amount of disruption that both schemes would have caused, if undertaken separately.
“To carry out the work safely there will be restrictions on both the M6 and the A444 during these weekends. The A444 under the west bridge will be closed overnight for two consecutive weekends for repairs to the bridge. The remaining part of the A444 roundabout will be reduced to one lane.
“Closures to the entry and exit slip roads at M6 junction 3 will be phased to take place at different locations, working systematically around the roundabout during each night. Local and strategic diversion routes will be well signed in advance of each phase of work.”
For the majority of works the M6 junction 3 roundabout will be reduced to one lane and the A444 north bound section of the roundabout (under the M6) will be closed.
Access to the M6 junction 3 roundabout will be restricted by the phasing of the work which will be carried out during night time off-peak periods.
Approach roads to the roundabout will be closed during the following times:
A444 northbound will be closed from the Richo Arena roundabout to the M6 junction 3 between Friday 3 and Monday 6 August, between Friday 10 and Monday 13 August, and between Friday 31 August and Monday 3 September;
B4113 northbound will be closed from the Longford Road Exhall to the M6 junction 3 between Friday 3 and Monday 6 August, between Friday 10 and Monday 13 August;
A444 roundabout at M6 junction 3 northbound (west side) will be closed between Friday 3 and Monday 6 August, between Friday 10 and Monday13 August and between Friday 31 August and Monday 3 September;
M6 southbound entry sliproad (exit off roundabout onto M6 southbound) will be closed between Friday 3 and Monday 6 August;
M6 northbound exit sliproad (entry onto roundabout from M6 northbound) will be closed between Friday 10 and Monday13 August;
B4113 southbound exit off the roundabout will be closed between Friday 10 and Monday 13 August;
M6 southbound exit sliproad (entry onto roundabout from M6 southbound) will be closed between Friday 17 and Monday 20 August;
M6 northbound entry sliproad (exit off roundabout onto M6 northbound) will be closed between Friday 17 and Monday 20 August.
For the safety of the workforce and road users, there will be a temporary 50mph speed limit on the M6 slip roads and a 30mph speed limit on the A444 roundabout that will help reduce traffic speeds gradually on approaching the junction.
