Working hard for vulnerable adults
Warwickshire County Council’s Adult, Health and Community Services have been working all weekend, along with other agencies and partners, to make sure that vulnerable adults across the county are safe from the effects of flooding.
Between Friday night and Sunday calls were coming into Adult Social Care representatives in the emergency centre at a rate of one a minute. As well as responding to incoming calls from concerned older people, their families and carers a team of staff were contacting older people around the county to make sure they were safe. Checks were made to ensure everyone had food, water and medication if needed.
Home carers were driven around the county in four by four vehicles to get them through the worst of the rising water. The vehicles are still on hand this week to ensure cover is maintained in the worst hit areas.
Two residential homes in Warwickshire had to be evacuated and secured early on Saturday morning. Staff in the Warwickshire County Council home have been busy collecting residents belongings and making sure they have all got what they need to keep them comfortable in their temporary accommodation. Other homes were alerted and many have taken in people either from the evacuated care home or those under threat in their own home.
Simon Robson, Head of Local Provider Services, said
“I would like to praise the continuing efforts of all staff who have worked over the weekend to ensure that all vulnerable adults in the county are safe and secure.
Despite this we have been able to maintain business as usual and services have
been carrying on normally.
“It is important to keep up the excellent community spirit and look out for
your friends and neighbours particular older people who may be at increased risk in
this situation.”
Health agencies have also been working with county council employees to ensure that emergency prescriptions were collected and delivered. District nurses also reviewed their cover regularly over the weekend to make sure all visits were made.
