Young people have a real Flare for having fun!

Seven young people from Nuneaton and North Warwickshire have been getting to grips with fire safety as part of a new course, which targets young people who are either not in work or education.

The two-week course, which is being run by Warwickshire County Council’s Fire and Rescue Service in partnership with Coventry and Warwickshire connexions is taking place at Nuneaton Fire Station and will run until Friday 27 July. All of the young people taking part have either just left school or finished training. The activities they have taken part in include back draft and flash over training, hose training, fire safety, driver training, abseiling and team building.

Youth Development Manager, Cheryl Jones said:
“A number of the young people on the course either have Special needs and we are really pleased with all of the activities they have taken part in. All of the young people have brought with them a lot of enthusiasm and we have spent the week having great fun.”

Next week the students will be learning about a range of fire safety issues including what to do in the event of a chip pan fire and how to get out of the house safely.  They will also be taking part in ladder and hose drills to see if they have the stamina it takes to become a firefighter.

On completion of the course all of the young people will take part in a ‘passing out parade’ on Friday 27 July. This will be attended by the youth development team and the student’s friends and family.
