Council leading by example on reducing waste
Warwickshire County Council is aiming to lead by example when calling on householders to recycle more, and improve its own operations to increase recycling and reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.
Tomorrow the county council is launching it’s new Corporate Waste Minimisation Strategy 2006 – 2011 - setting out how the council hopes to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill from the many services it provides.
The council produces a variety of wastes from office paper to school catering to construction and demolition waste. All materials need to be treated differently, but the council is hoping to move as much material as possible up the waste hierarchy and encourage all council staff to reduce, re-use, recycle and compost.
Cllr Alan Cockburn, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for Corporate Services, said: “Just like Warwickshire residents are working hard to reduce waste, recycle more and reduce their carbon footprint, the council is also trying to reduce its footprint. Reducing our rubbish and recycling more material is one important way the council can help reduce our impact on climate change.”
