Drivers need to be cautious as heavy rain is forecast
Motorists are being called upon to be cautious this week following a warning from the Met Office that heavy rain is expected.
The Met Office announcement issued at 08:42 today is as follows:
Slow moving heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop through Wednesday. Local torrential downpours may give totals of 20 to 30mm in a short period of time. The public are advised to take extra care and refer to the Environment Agency Floodline and ‘flood warnings in force’ and to the Highways Agency for further advice on road conditions.
Andrew Savage, Warwickshire County Council’s County Highways Operational Services Manager, said: “Standing water can be extremely dangerous and motorists should take care during the rain in the next few days. If any roads are closed, motorists should take heed of the signs and not try and drive through standing water.
“In the floods last month many drivers sustained damage to vehicles as they attempted to drive through flood water. The extent of abandoned cars highlighted the vulnerability of cars going through not much more than 100-150mm of water. It is particularly hazardous driving across flowing floodwater whether it is river water or from adjacent fields, even 4x4 vehicles got caught out as drivers attempted to get through the water.”
