Nationally - fire deaths lowest since 1958

County Fire Officer, William Brown welcomes the latest Communities and Local Government fire statistics showing national fire deaths at their lowest since 1958.

Provisional figures published in the Fire Statistics Monitor, (for the 12-month period ending 30 September 2006), shows an overall decline in fire deaths of 1% and a drop of 9% in home fire deaths.
County Fire Officer, William Brown said:
“In Warwickshire last year there was one fire related death as the result of a fire in a home, this I feel is one too many. Residents still need to ensure that fire safety in the home is taken seriously and we will continue to provide free services such as home fire safety checks and key fire safety information to homes across Warwickshire. We will also continue to focus our effort to educate our young people, through our schools programme and Young Fire Fighter groups on how they can stay safe from fire”
Portfolio Holder for Community Protection, councillor Richard Hobbs said:
“I am really pleased to see that the continued efforts of fire services across the country have ensured that residents are now safer than ever before. However, no service can afford to rest of its laurels and the work carried out in local communities including youth programmes, home fire safety checks and campaigns aimed at more vulnerable members of our community will continue to be built upon to ensure that the number of fire related deaths in homes continues to decline.”
