Theft of road signs is putting drivers at risk

Motorists’ safety is being put at risk following a spate of thefts of road signs on busy roundabout junctions.

Witnesses are being called upon to report any information they have about the theft of 15 large chevron signs from the junction of the A46 and A425 at Stanks Roundabout near Warwick, to Warwickshire Police on 01926 415000.

This took place sometime overnight on Thursday, August 9, into the early hours of the morning of Friday, August 10, and follows similar thefts in recent months along the length of the A46 in Warwickshire towards Stratford and beyond.

Peter Hallam, Warwickshire County Council’s County Highways Warwick Area Surveyor, said: "It is amazing that people have to resort to the theft of road signs to make a few pounds from scrap metal. The theft creates a real safety hazard to motorists. It will cost more than £3,000 to put in new signs, and as well as the cost there is the disruption of traffic management."

Mr Hallam says the sign thieves may well be posing as highway maintenance teams working on road signs in Warwickshire, but if they are not wearing yellow safety clothing or in vehicles with Warwickshire County Council County Highways - Carillion logos then report vehicle details to the Police on the above number or County Highways telephone number 01926 412515.

County Highways is keen to prosecute those stealing the signs and those that handle such stolen goods.
