Warwickshire celebrates GCSE results today

Thousands of students across Warwickshire will be receiving their GCSE and vocational exam results today.

Although the exact countywide achievement data will not be known for some time, Warwickshire students have traditionally achieved results above the national average and headteachers are anticipating students will do very well again this year.

The local authority has been working closely with schools to emphasise the importance of standards of literacy and numeracy. Last year the number of pupils in Warwickshire achieving five plus GCSE A*-C passes or equivalent, including English and mathematics was above that achieved nationally.

Bob Hooper, Head of School Performance at Warwickshire County Council, said: “I would like to congratulate all our students on their achievements and wish them luck in the next stage in their career. I would also like to acknowledge the hard work of all the teachers that have contributed to the success of the students today.

“It will take a while for the full results to become available, but it will not be surprising to find that the vast majority of students have been successful in reaching their individual targets.

“Performance tables now try to reflect the individual progress young people make in school as well as overall attainment with the introduction of “value-added” measures.  We welcome the government’s emphasis on English and mathematics. In Warwickshire we recognise the importance that employers and educational establishments place on achievement in the basic skills of literacy and numeracy.”

He added: “Although the majority of students will be celebrating today, we recognise that some students may not have achieved the grades that they expected and we would like to advise them that information and support is available through their school and local Connexions service. I would reassure them that whatever their results there are a variety of career opportunities open to them to continue their learning at school, college or in a work-based training situation.”
