Heritage Open Day at ‘The Butts’
Warwickshire Museum Field Services are inviting members of the public to get a behind the scenes look at its offices in ‘The Butts’ on Friday 7 September at a day entitled ‘Polecats and Pottery’.
The Butts, a late 18th century listed building, is the workplace of Warwickshire Museum Field Services archaeologists and ecologists.
The day’s title refers to the range of work carried out by the archaeology and ecology divisions which seek to understand and preserve ancient relics found in the county as well as the flora and fauna.
The day, which is part of Heritage Open Days 2007, will give visitors the chance to see how they can report archaeological finds and how to conduct their own independent research.
Visitors will also have the opportunity, whilst learning about some of the teams’ research projects, to see how archaeologists are involved in planning applications and discover how the historical character of the county’s landscape is being recorded.
In a similar vein, ecologists will be on hand to advise on how to report sightings of any flora, fauna or insect life, and can advise on how people can make a positive contribution to the county’s biodiversity.
Jonathan Parkhouse, County Archaeologist, said: “Staff at The Butts carry out essential work that protects the heritage of the county and preserves its plants and wildlife.
"Much of what we do goes unseen and yet is absolutely fascinating for anyone interested in Warwickshire’s past, present and future. This day offers the community the opportunity to see what we do, ask questions and find out about getting involved in some of the many events we organise.”
‘Pottery and Polecats’, the Museum Field Services Open Day runs from 10.00am-3pm at The Butts, Warwick (opposite the Police Station and Punch Bowl Pub). Entry free.
