Hunters Lane Household Waste Recycling Centre closes

The out-dated Household Waste Recycling Centre in Rugby closes its gates for the last time this Sunday.

As attitudes have changed and new legislation regarding the treatment of waste have been introduced, the emphasis on separating waste for reuse and recycling has increased. This has resulted in the Hunters Lane site becoming insufficient for the requirements of Warwickshire residents.

The new refurbished centre has been designed to ensure it can meet the current and future recycling needs of local residents and will open in time for Easter 2008.

There are a number of options available for residents whilst the site is closed.

Use free kerbside collections of waste and recycling provided by Rugby Borough Council.

Take glass, paper, plastic bottles and drinks cans to the ‘bring banks’ located around Rugby.  The two largest existing sites are located at:

Tesco, Leicester Road,
Featherbed Lane, car park

Extra ‘bring banks’ are being provided during the period whilst Hunters Lane is closed, the location of these extra sites is still being finalised.

You can find your nearest ‘bring bank’ on the ‘recycle now’ website: http://www.recyclenow.com or by ringing Rugby Borough Council on 01788 533533.

If you live in the north of borough, you can go to Lutterworth Household Waste Recycling Centre which residents in cars will be able to use free of charge for household waste taken free at Hunters Lane.

If you live to the south of Rugby Town Centre, you can go to the site at Stockton, which will be open seven days a week while Hunters Lane is closed.

Rugby Borough Council also provide a bulky waste collection service and will collect large items at the kerbside for £7 per item for the first three items and £4 per item thereafter.

It is not possible to provide a temporary HWRC as the Environment Agency has strict rules about how waste can be collected. While, some time ago, Warwickshire County Council would have been able to provide a facility with a few skips and some steps, the local authority is no longer able to do this due to changes in the regulations of waste management.

Cllr Martin Heatley, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: “Now that the busy summer holiday period has ended it is time for the Rugby recycling centre to close for refurbishment. Please bear with us while to works take place, when the site opens again next spring it will be a vast improvement. “

Any flytipping can be reported to Rugby Borough Council by calling 01788 533533 or by visiting http://www.rugby.gov.uk

Warwickshire County Council apologises for any inconvenience caused and ask that residents bear with us while these works take place.
