Warmington Farm wins local history competition

A group of local history enthusiasts from Warmington have won a competition to produce exhibition panels on the subject of Grove Farm, their favourite local building.

The competition, entitled Building Memories was organised by Warwickshire County Record Office and the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust Records Office with the aim of encouraging people to use their local archives and local studies libraries.

The winning entry was Grove Farm, built around 1700 for a yeoman farmer, William Claridge. The panels have been professionally redesigned and will be displayed at Kineton Library until 21st September.

Panels around the display give details of the farm’s past including the history of each floor of the house, its tenants form 1785 – 1950 and details of parts of the land including the construction of Turnpike Road in 1725, the Board School in 1879 through to the construction of the M40 in 1988.

Rob Eyre of Warwickshire County Record Office said “ Exhibition panels were presented to us from all over the county. We were very impressed by the quality of the entries and would like to display all of them at the record office at some stage over the coming year.”

The research notes and panels for all the entries will be retained permanently as part of the archive at the record office in Warwick.
