Firefighters continue to tackle blaze at landfill site

Around 30 firefighters have been working tirelessly to tackle a blaze at the landfill site in Ufton, near Southam this weekend.

Crews were called out at 12.14pm on Sunday 16 September to a fire at the site, which takes waste from both Staffordshire and Warwickshire.  The site is now closed and rubbish is being diverted to alternative waste disposal sites. The fire is affecting cover material, primarily car frag.

Crews are still tackling the blaze and are currently laying two miles of hose from Bishop bowl lakes for the use of specialist firefighting equipment, including two high volume pumps from Warwickshire and West Midlands Fire and Rescue Service.

Crews are liaising with the Health Protection Agency on public health issues and the Environment Agency who are monitoring smoke from the fire.

Robert Weeks, Head of Environment at Stratford District Council said:

"Stratford-on-Avon District Council is advising residents to stay indoors and keep all doors and windows closed.  If you require any further advise please call 01789 260835."
Warwickshire County Council is advising that schools in the area are still open.  Roads around Deppers Bridge may be closed for the use of specialist equipment throughout the incident.
