The proof of the pudding is in the eating
School children from Bridge Town Primary in Stratford were invited to become food critics for the day when they took part in a special food tasting for County Caterers’ new winter menu.
Warwickshire County Council’s catering arm has developed five nutritious new dishes for their winter menu, which will be launched in November.
Pupils from Bridge Town Primary were invited to taste a Warming Winter Casserole with Braised Beef, followed by a Fruity Apple Muffin. Members of the catering development team were on hand to take down the youngsters’ comments so that the menu can be refined even further to please young palates.
Lindsay Higgins, Development Manager for County Caterers, said: “We really value our customers’ feedback and, as the saying goes, the proof of the pudding is in the tasting. Children are more likely to take a school meal over the winter months and we are doing our utmost to develop dishes that are warm, tasty and healthy - food that children will enjoy which is good for them.”
Primary school children from other parts of the county will take part in the trial by tucking into other new winter warmers including Fruity Chicken Casserole, Sweet and Sour Chicken and Beany Tomato Pasta Bake.
Warwickshire County Caterers introduced their nutritious menus well ahead of Government requirements. Each day children must have a balanced meal from the main food groups, including fruit and vegetables; meat, fish and alternatives; bread, cereals and potatoes; milk and dairy products.
Lindsay Higgins of Warwickshire County Caterers, added: “We are investing in school kitchens and making the whole dining experience enjoyable for our youngsters.
Parents can be assured that their children can have a good appetising meal at school – and it is important to have a hot meal during the winter months. This is the time of year when most children take school meals and we want to encourage those who have never had them before to give them a go.”
