Students develop appetite for lunchtime clubs

Students at a secondary school in Nuneaton are tucking into drumming, astronomy and basketball during their lunch breaks thanks to a new scheme to promote their wellbeing.

Rather than being lured into town by chips and crisps, students at Manor Park Community School are now indulging in a menu of more than 30 different activity clubs. Members of the Student Council have helped devise the activities in line with the school’s new lunchtime policy to keep students on site.

The aim of the scheme is to improve the health and wellbeing of students by keeping them in school where they can access a range of interesting and productive pursuits in addition to healthy school meals.

The clubs are also enhancing the county council’s work in developing extended services in the local community, with schools used as local bases for activities, advice and information.

Headteacher Patsy Weighill said: “I have already received letters from parents welcoming the activity clubs. Parents have peace of mind that their children are safely at school and we are offering every student the chance to do something enjoyable and constructive at lunchtime.”

The clubs are entirely optional and students are also encouraged to take advantage of the school grounds which feature large play areas, and new outdoor seating which is being provided by the county council.

The activities on offer include astronomy, football, basketball, chess, two rock bands, a choir, drumming, steel pans, creative writing, crafts, sculpture, ICT and drama.

Shona Walton, Principal Inspector for Warwickshire County Council, said: “Manor Park has been quick to recognise the value of activity clubs which can contribute to a healthier lifestyle and improve pupil performance both in and out of the classroom. “
