Be careful with candles, Rugby residents warned!

Warwickshire County Council’s Fire and Rescue Service is urging people in Rugby to be extra careful with candles, particularly as they celebrate upcoming events such as Diwali, Eid, Halloween and Bonfire Night.

The call comes following a property fire in Rugby last week, which caused extensive smoke and fire damage.

The incident happened at a rented property in Rugby town centre on Sunday 23 September.  The occupier had lit some candles in the living room of her flat and left them unattended for a short period.  She had placed the candles close to her television and curtains, which quickly caught fire.

The resulting fire caused serious fire, heat and smoke damage to the lounge. Fortunately, the occupier was able to escape the property unharmed and neighbours alerted the fire service.

Area Risk Officer, Andy Morgan at Rugby Fire Station said:
“Candles are often used at this time of year with religious celebrations such as Diwali and Eid. They are also used during Halloween and on Bonfire Night, but the potential dangers they cause are often not recognised.

“We urge the people in Rugby to ensure they don’t place lit candles near furnishings or on top of their television and that they never leave them unattended.
“It’s also important to ensure you have adequate smoke detection in your home, regardless of whether you are the home owner or renting your property.”
