Pupils spread the word on European languages

Pupils at Quinton Primary School were practising their Polish, getting to grips with German and eating their way around the continent when they celebrated the European Day of Languages on Wednesday 26 September.

Children started the day with a continental breakfast before they embarked upon a carousel of cultural and linguistic activities. Pupils from reception to Year 6 were given lessons in Polish and German and other activities included creative work on flags, sessions about European culture, and a gastronomic tour where pupils indulged in a range of different dishes.
Quinton Primary already runs a successful lunchtime Spanish club and children also learn French as part of the school’s curriculum. The celebration of European Languages has been organised as part of the school’s enrichment programme.

Headteacher Sarah Whalley said: “The aim of the day is to embrace the language and culture of other countries in a fun and innovative way. We want to encourage as many pupils as possible to continue with languages as we recognise that they are a key skill in the world of work and help broaden
opportunities in later life. ”

Cllr John Burton, Cabinet Member for Schools at Warwickshire County Council, said: “I should like to congratulate Quinton Primary on their European Day of Languages celebration. Warwickshire County Council welcomes the idea of offering different languages to younger children and we are already working towards that goal with the National Languages Strategy.”

The European Day of Languages takes place on the 26 September every year. Across the continent, events take place celebrating the many different languages which are spoken in Europe and encouraging people to improve their language skills.
