New cycleway to Warwick Technology Park opens
Warwickshire County Council has completed a new 2.5km combined footway and cycleway linking Warwick Gates and Warwick to Warwick Technology Park.
The new link, which runs alongside Heathcote Lane, Gallows Hill and Banbury Road, will enable local people who work at the Technology Park and other nearby locations to walk or cycle to work.
The scheme includes a new signalised ‘Toucan’ crossing at the Europa Way roundabout to make is safer and easier for cyclists and pedestrians to cross Europa Way.
The scheme has been constructed with funding from the County Council’s Local Transport Plan, together with some developer contributions from a local residential development. Two companies based at the Technology Park - National Grid Transco and ASTRAC - also made a contribution towards the scheme.
Cllr Martin Heatley, Warwickshire County Council’s Environment Cabinet portfolio holder, said “The new link will help the significant number of people who live within easy reach of their workplace to travel to work in a sustainable way. We hope it will encourage more people to leave their cars at home, helping to reduce congestion and pollution”.
The new route is the latest addition to Warwick and Leamington’s cycle network. Construction of a cycleway along the Coventry Road north of Warwick is also underway, as part of the National Cycle Network route under development between Warwick, Kenilworth, Coventry and Nuneaton.
In addition, approval has recently been given for a new cycleway on Tachbrook Road, between Queensway and High Street. The new link, due for construction early in 2008, will connect to a number of existing routes and help people cycling between south Leamington, the train station and the town centre.
