Pupils drum up interest in African activities

Families of pupils at Southam Primary School will be dancing, singing and even eating to an African beat today (Friday 5 October).

Parents of Year 2 children at Southam Primary School have been given the opportunity to take part in a workshop of African Performing Arts on Friday 5 October. The session will mainly involve drumming but pupils and their parents will also be given the opportunity to take part in African dancing and singing too.

Warwickshire’s County Caterers have also created an African lunch menu for the occasion which includes Morroccan style chicken with cous cous, African style fish, maize, flatbreads and banana biscuits.

The African Arts Workshop is being offered to a cluster of schools in Southam as part of Extended Services, which is being coordinated by the county council and aims to further develop schools into hubs of advice and learning for children, young people, families and local communities. A special extended services day is also being held for all families in the Southam area at The Grange, Coventry Rd, Southam from 10am to 4pm on Saturday 13 October to find out more other family events, support services and adult education in the local area.  Refreshments will also be available.

Schools are coming together in clusters to make sure they can offer services such as access to advice, training and childcare. While schools are used as the base for these activities they can be run by a number of providers from the public or voluntary sector.

Headteacher Jennifer Jackson said: “This is a lovely opportunity for parents to try out something completely new with their child and share in their learning.    As a follow up to the workshop there will be the chance to celebrate and share their work at The Grange on Saturday 13 October.”
