Temporary Recycling Arrangements for Rugby
Warwickshire County Council’s waste management staff have reported that the temporary recycling facilities put in place while the Hunters Lane Recycling Centre is closed for refurbishment are generally working well.
Waste that would normally be taken to Hunters Lane has been distributed between recycling centres at Stockton and Lutterworth (in Leicestershire), and the borough council run bring sites for recycling.
With residents getting increasingly used to the alternative arrangements, more and more are taking recyclable materials to bring sites; incidence of leaving rubbish by the bins have reduced.
Facilities are available in Rugby for recycling glass, paper, cardboard, plastic bottles and drink cans at the new recycling banks at Ashlawn Road, Jubilee Street, Craven Road – Stoneyard car park; these are the only sites that collect cardboard to date in Rugby.
The County Council does regret, however, that there have been instances where a minority is spoiling things for the majority of residents. Leicestershire County Council have kindly agreed to allow Warwickshire residents to use the Lutterworth site for convenience while the Rugby site is closed.
However, staff at the Lutterworth site have been the recipients of some severe verbal abuse. The Lutterworth facility manages to recycle 67% of the waste going through the site, but this can only be achieved by everyone sorting out as much of the recyclable material as possible.
Project Manager, Jo Ingle, said: “If the abuse of staff at the Lutterworth site does not stop then Leicestershire County Council will be forced to withdraw their offer in order to protect their staff. Whilst we appreciate that the redevelopment work is causing Rugby residents some inconvenience, we would request that people do not abuse the hospitality of the Lutterworth site or all of the Rugby residents using it will suffer the consequences.”
