Dare to drive safely?

If you are aged between, 18 – 24 and drive on the roads in North Warwickshire, then Warwickshire County Council’s Fire and Rescue Service need to hear from you!

In response to concerns about the high rate of serious accidents amongst young drivers, WFRS established a unique driving course aimed at improving driving skills and enhancing the knowledge of young people who drive on rural roads. Over 30 students have completed the courses so far with over 90% taking the test achieving a pass.

Station Manager, Dave Hewston said:
“What we are looking for is for young drivers aged between 18 –24 with at least six months driving experience to take part in an advanced driving course which is due to run in November. The course is free and students taking part will attend an induction day at Coleshill Fire Station, as well as training sessions with both the Police and the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM).”

The courses, which have recently been recognized with a national award, are run in conjunction with Warwickshire Police and the IAM cover advanced driving techniques, hazard perception and highlights the consequences of accidents and poor driving.  Students also have the opportunity to travel out in police cars with the Police Driving Instructors to demonstrate their advanced driving techniques out on the road.

Following the induction, each of the students will spend a further day with Advanced Driving Instructors from the IAM followed by taking the Institute’s Advanced Driving test a few weeks later. Successful students will then become full members of The Institute of Advanced Motorists. As an added bonus Adrian Flux Insurance Brokers have generously agreed to offer up to 25% discount on successful candidates car insurance quotes, should they choose to insure with their company.

Applicants must hold a full driving licence and have access to an insured car in which to take their Advanced Driving Test. If you’re thinking of putting forward your son, daughter or friend, please make sure that they fully support the nomination, as students will only be successful if committed to practising the advanced driving techniques covered on the course.

Students will need to be able to attend the induction day on November 3rd and to attend for a further days IAM practice during the following week.

Interested students should register by sending their name, address, contact telephone number and age to Warwickshire Fire and Rescue service at nwart@warwickshire.gov.uk

North Warwickshire’s Safer Stronger Communities Fund is funding the course.

Applications need to be received by 23 October 2007. Places are limited, but the Fire Service would like to hear from as many interested students as possible.
