Top Tips for a Safe and Enjoyable Bonfire Night
Almost a 1000 people, over half of which are children, are injured each year in firework related accidents, and the highest number of injuries occur at family or private parties. That’s why Warwickshire County Council Trading Standards Service has put together some top tips to help people have an enjoyable and safe Bonfire Night.
Follow the Firework Code.
If you intend to have alcohol at your bonfire party, nominate responsible persons who are not drinking to take charge of the firework display. Keep drinkers well away from fireworks and bonfires.
Read and follow the instructions before lighting a firework. Light them at arms length, using a taper. Failure to do this is one of the main causes of injury.
Ensure that fireworks are stored in a closed box. Never carry fireworks in your pockets.
Watch fireworks from a safe distance. Follow any guidance provided and stand well back.
Only adults should handle and light fireworks. Keep children well away from fireworks and always supervise them.
Rockets can travel at speeds of up to 150 miles an hour! Never go back to a firework once it has been lit.
Keep pets indoors.
Sparklers can reach temperatures of up to 2,000 degrees Celsius, similar to a Bonfire barbecue. Do not allow children under the age of 5 to use sparklers, and supervise the over 5’s. Light sparklers one at a time and wear gloves.
