Film award is fitting tribute to Warwickshire champion of disability rights

Staff of Warwickshire County Council and of the New Ideas Advocacy who worked with the late Serena Nordon to produce the ‘In Our Shoes’ film have spoken of their pride and delight that the documentary film won Best Documentary 2007 at the Oska Bright Film Festival.

Staff and family travelled with Susie Pallitt, Serena’s friend who had worked with her on the production of ‘In Our Shoes’, to Brighton for the unique film festival, run by and for people with learning disabilities, and returned to Warwickshire delighted that Serena’s sizeable legacy has been enhanced still further with the recognition of this award.

Karen McNally of Warwickshire County Council, who worked with Serena at the Emscote Centre and was Serena’s friend, said:  “We’re all delighted here.  Serena campaigned tirelessly to raise awareness of issues for people with learning disabilities and this is yet another wonderful memory of a wonderful woman for us to cherish.”

Serena’s sister, Pat King, was another who was bursting with pride at the award.  She said:  “I’m just so proud of her and the ability to achieve what she has achieved.

“This award is a testament to Serena and everybody who has worked with her.  It recognises Serena’s legacy and the difference she has made in the perception of people with learning disabilities throughout Warwickshire and beyond.”

Anybody wishing to mark Serena’s achievements can make a donation in her honour to the Mervyn Jeffries Fund which helps people in Warwickshire with learning disabilities.  Cash or cheques can be left at the Emscote Centre on Nelson Lane, Warwick or can call 01926 492100 for further details.
