Writing is on the wall for youth club improvement

Teenagers from Lillington Youth Centre are spending their half-term blasting away graffiti to make way for a new work of art.

The Warwickshire County Council project will be enlisting the help of a community initiative called ‘Tagbusters’ who will be showing the youngsters how to wipe out graffiti from their youth club walls. Tagbusters is run by Gladys Gibbs who also serves as chair of Lillington Youth Centre’s management committee.
Once the youngsters have a clear canvas, they will be under the supervision of professional artist Chris Hunt who will be helping them to create an eye-catching mural.

The graffiti project is being supported by a grant from the Youth Opportunity Fund. Young people from Lillington successfully put together a bid for £20,000 of the fund to transform their youth facilities and improve their sports area and build new fencing.

The Youth Opportunity Fund is a DCSF initiative operated through Warwickshire County Council. The idea behind the fund is to increase the opportunities available for young people and to encourage their involvement in local communities.

Hollie Hutchings, Youth Worker for Warwickshire County Council, said: “We have been really impressed with the commitment of young people who wanted to make the youth club a better place to be. While it involves a lot of hard work, this project will help young people to work creatively and as a team to improve the centre for their local community.

“Also by seeing first hand what it takes to clean away graffiti, we hope young people will discourage others from tagging walls and buildings.”
