Council to consult on admissions increase

Warwickshire County Council is to consult on proposals to raise the admission number for Stratford High School.

Significant building development in Stratford has led to an increased demand for secondary places and the school is already close to capacity for year groups 8, 9 and 10.  The proposal is supported by the school as an appropriate response to its longer-term accommodation needs.

With extra homes expected to be built in the town by 2011, additional demand for places across all groups can be expected and it is forecast that Year 7 figures could rise to 257 students per year in the 2009 academic year. The current admission number for the school is 240 and the proposal is to increase this to 265.

The local authority has emphasised that the proposal has been brought to cater for priority area pupils and should have little impact on admissions to other local secondary schools.

The consultation period will take place from 5 November to 14 December and will involve a wide range of stakeholders including parents and carers of existing and prospective pupils, staff, the School Council, governing bodies of schools in South Warwickshire, parish councils and Stratford District Council.  The matter will also be referred to Stratford Area Committee for comments in the New Year.

Councillor John Burton, Portfolio Holder for Schools, said: “It is our duty to cater for Stratford’s growing pupil population and we are embarking upon a consultation period to give people the opportunity to express their views.”
